The RNLI's E Class Lifeboat
The E class is powered by 2 Steyr 240HP turbo diesels. It is propelled by twin Hamilton water jets. These are not vulnerable to driftwood and are safer for persons in the water. They allow precision in manoeuvring and can provide emergency stops.
The E Class lifeboat was chosen to operate on the Thames as a top speed of 40 knots was required and none of the RNLI's existing inshore lifeboats achieve this speed. This is the fastest class of lifeboat in the RNLI fleet.
The boat carries two VHF marine radios and a police band radio for direct communications with the shore and river police.
